Messages of condolence flooded in from family and former team-mates, including Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield, who wrote: ‘So sorry to hear about that mate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and the boys. If you ever need anything mate don’t ever hesitate to ask! Rest in peace Donna love Jamie and Louise xxx.’

Tragic: The partner of Carlisle United and Scotland striker Lee Miller died last night according to the Carlisle United club website

The couple met in 2002 and started dating the following April. Three months later, the striker unexpectedly proposed over a game of pool, hiding an engagement ring in one of the pockets.
Mrs Miller later told a magazine: ‘He potted one of the balls and asked me to reach into the pocket to get it and there, instead of a ball, something sparkled in the darkness – a white gold band encrusted with diamonds.
‘It all felt so romantic and the fact that he proposed over a game of pool really made me giggle. It was a very “us” moment and one I’ll always remember.’
The couple married in May 2008. Mrs Miller said: ‘During his speech, Lee asked some of his footie mates to be upstanding. They took to their feet and the next thing I heard was a rather tuneful rendition of There’s Only One Donna Miller.’

Poignant: Carlisle and Scotland striker Lee Miller left a poignant tribute to his wife on his Twitter account following her death last night

The following year, they had to cut short a holiday to Turkey after Mrs Miller suffered an allergic reaction to medication.
Miller joined Carlisle from Middlesbrough last summer and was this week named as the club's player of the year.
A Carlisle United spokesman said: ‘Lee’s just distraught. We knew Donna had been ill. The thoughts of the directors, staff and everyone connected with Carlisle United are with Lee and his family.’
Alex Totten, Miller’s manager at Falkirk, said: ‘I visited Lee just a couple of months ago. I’m very fond of the lad and his family and when I got the news this morning, I just couldn’t believe it. It’s so sad.

Tributes: Comments left on Lee Miller's Twitter page today following the death of his partner Donna last night

‘Donna was just a young girl and they were married with kids. It’s terrible.
‘The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Falkirk are with Lee and his family today.’
An Aberdeen FC spokesman said: ‘Everyone at the club is absolutely devastated at the news.
‘Most staff knew Donna when she was here with Lee and all our thoughts go out to him and his family.’
